The Bucks County Classic in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, is much more than a bike race. Founded in 2004, the event has become a celebration of cycling, bringing together community rides, kids’ races, spectators, families, and some of the best racers in the country on its iconic eight-turn, 1.4-mile downtown course. For Marlies Mejías, it was also a last-minute family road trip to one of her favorite races.
With strong late-season fitness and plenty of confidence, Marlies lined up ready for a hard, aggressive day of racing. The technical course and repeated accelerations quickly took their toll, and as the race progressed, the field began to split. A reduced group ultimately remained to contest the finish. That suited Marlies perfectly.
With her daughter cheering from the finish line and her husband supporting her from the pits, Marlies positioned herself for the final uphill sprint, a finish that plays directly to her strengths. She launched powerfully to take the victory ahead of Skylar Schneider of L39ION of Los Angeles and Barbara Guarischi of SD Worx–Protime.
“I love this race and I decided at the last minute to go, and I’m so happy I did,” said Marlies. “It is such a fun course, the crowd is always amazing, and having my family there made it even more special. The race was really hard and the group got smaller, but I felt strong. I love an uphill power sprint, so when we came into the finish I knew I had a good chance. It was a really special win.”
The victory adds another standout result to an exceptional season for Marlies and was made even sweeter by sharing the day with her family in Doylestown.
